I am always surprised by which songs really take off into the hearts of people and this was one that pleasantly shocked me.
As a Minnesotan there is always this weird lingering pressure to be nice and polite. As a black person I was taught from childhood to be extra nice and polite to police officers to keep from being murdered.
"Mr. Officer" is born from where those two things meet. A sort of "what if" concept of how one might try to polite themselves out of being killed by the people sworn to protect us.
Tuvok The Word brings that feeling full circle I think. How many of these people taken from us had families, children, future plans with them that will never be realized...it's a powerful verse made more powerful to me because the children he's talking about in his verse are my nieces.
I am so glad people have found connection to this song and I hope it can inspire some very real conversations whenever it's played to someone for the first time.
